Danville, Illinois

Located in east central Illinois, about 120 miles south of Chicago, 35 miles east of Champaign-Urbana and 90 miles west of Indianapolis, Danville serves as the county seat of Vermilion County. With a population of over 33,000, Danville offers a variety of outdoor activities, unique shopping experiences and nationally recognized sports teams.

Sitting just west of Indianapolis, residents and visitors have easy access to all the metropolitan city has to offer, including professional sporting events, Indianapolis Zoo, Motor Speedway, Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and much more.

Arts and Culture

If you enjoy theater, dance and song, then Danville is your happy place. The city boasts over 12 active arts groups, like the Lincoln Park Theater Company, Danville Symphony Orchestra and Vermilion Festival Chorus.

Rich with history, Danville features a variety of museums and historical sites. The Vermilion County War Museum showcases historical pieces from the Revolutionary War to Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The Danville National Cemetery, where veterans from the Civil War to the present have been laid to rest, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

The Fithian House was once the home to Dr. William Fithian, who was a personal friend to Abraham Lincoln. The two met in the Illinois legislature. In 1858, Lincoln visited Dr. Fithian in his home. The bedroom in which he stayed has the original floors Lincoln walked on and the bed he slept on.

In summer 2010, a muralist group called the Walldogs made up of about 160 talented artists from around the world painted 18 murals in downtown Danville. The murals illustrate the city’s history. Since then, more murals have been added.

Education

The city of Danville provides a number of public and parochial educational opportunities for students of all ages. Danville School District 118 consists of one preschool, eight elementary schools, one middle school, one alternative program and one high school.

There are three parochial schools in Danville. Schlarman Academy is a Catholic-based school that serves children and teenagers from preschool through 12th grade. Danville Lutheran serves children kindergarten through eighth grade. First Baptist Christian School serves children and teenagers from preschool through 12th grade.

Higher education is also available at Danville Area Community College.

Shopping & Recreation

Danville offers plenty to do for the outdoor lover, including17 area parks and four golf courses. Kennekuk County Park spans 3,000 acres with a 170-acre lake and offers activities such as fishing, hiking, boating and wildlife viewing.

Danville’s downtown area is the heartbeat of the city where you can find events happening year round. Shopping enthusiasts can find unique shopping experiences. Shops range from antique stores, flower shops, fashion boutiques and more.

In addition to local shops, Danville has a variety of national retailers. In 2012, the Vermilion Street Corridor project was finished, which features a Kohl’s, TJ Maxx and Meijer.

Danville has three local teams, including the Danville Dans baseball team, the Danville Dashers hockey team and the Illinois Coal Miners basketball team.
