Description

Performs a variety of business office, reception, clerical and clinical duties in a primary care office practice. Performs related work as required to assure the efficiency of the office including stocking, housekeeping and assisting the clinical staff as needed. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: These are the tasks that consist of the position’s main purpose and objectives. Essential functions are critical or fundamental to the performance of the position. They are the major functions for which the person is held accountable. Non-essential functions of the position are noted with an “NE”. 

1. Greets patients and visitors in a prompt, courteous, and helpful manner. 

2. Reviews allergies, current medications and doses and updates record as appropriate. 

3. Assists provider with procedures as requested. 

4. Assures medical records are up to date with correct address, names, phone number. 

5. Takes calls from patients and documents call. Nurse or provider is informed nature of call as appropriate. May call patient back to repeat provider/nurse advice. 

6. Places phone calls to managed care organizations for certification, pharmacies for prescriptions as ordered by provider, and to schedule tests appointments. 

7. Performs diagnostic tests under direct supervision of provider, i.e. pulse oximetry, wall chart eye exam, finger stick, glucose, hematocrit, tests and results are documented on medical record. 

8. Checks in patients, verifies and updates necessary information in the medical record. Assists patients as needed. 

9. Maintains schedule and follows office scheduling policies. 

10. Prepares patients Pre-visit work as necessary for providers 

11. Answers telephone, screens calls, takes messages, and provides information. Responds to emergency calls according to established procedures. 

12. Facilitates communications throughout the practice. 

13. Types correspondence as needed. 

14. Sorts and delivers mail, medical records, and other correspondence. 

15. Prepares orders for equipment and supplies.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

High school diploma or equivalent and successful completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program and completion of a pharmacology and medication administration course.


Minimum completion of clinic medical office assistant internship


CMA Certification and verification by the American Association of Medical Assistants is required.  This program may be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). 


This position requires specific knowledge and training related to the performance of administrative skills, technical / clinical skills and medical procedures commonly performed in a medical practice setting. 


Demonstrates good organizational skills in coordinating services with coworkers and/or other departments and facilities. 


Responds to stressful situations in a calm and rational manner and cooperates with all to facilitate integration of services. 


A physician delegation agreement will be completed and reviewed for each CMA on an annual basis. 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


1 year clinic experience desired
