Reports to the Interventional Radiology Coordinator/Supervisor/Manager. Assists physicians with arteriograms and or other specialized radiologic procedures under sterile technique in diagnosis and treatment of patients. In doing so, prepares examination area, positions patients for procedures and operates complex radiology equipment in accordance with established techniques and routines. Assists physicians as necessary by passing materials, taking exposures as directed and more. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care that is appropriate to the ages of the patients served.
Licensed with ARRT and IEMA. Must have current BLS.
Knowledge of principles and procedures of diagnostic radiology as normally acquired through completion of two years post high school training at an approved School of Radiological Technology.
Approximately six to twelve months on the job experience necessary in order to gain technical competency in performing radiologic, angiography and special radiological procedures.
Interpersonal skills necessary in order to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress, and to gather and exchange patient information with nursing personnel and physicians.
Analytical skills necessary to adjust radiographic techniques to comply with varied patient anatomy relative to size, density and present pathology. May be required to troubleshoot minor equipment malfunctions.
Assists proceduralists and surgeons intra-operatively with routine and complex surgical procedures including scrubbing, draping, passing instruments, sponges, sutures, and other supplies and equipment to surgeons, holding retractors, first assisting, and assisting in clean-up after a case.
Anticipates and responds to the proceduralist and surgeons’ needs during the course of the procedure.
Receives surgical specimens, preserves specimen accordingly and notifies circulating nurse of the specimen type and source. Labels and sends specimens to Laboratory Department.
