Reporting to the Ambulatory Advanced Practice Provider Supervisor and the OSF Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center Medical Director, acts as a healthcare provider to patients accessing the Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center with acute and chronic, non-healing wounds. The Wound Center APP assesses wounds, enters appropriate diagnoses, prepares care plans, orders labs and diagnostics, prescribes medication, wound care dressings and supplies, provides wound care education, and refers to allied healthcare specialties. The APP performs aerobic wound cultures, sharp debridement, punch biopsies, and skin substitute application.  They also assess patients to determine if they meet the qualifications for hyperbaric oxygen therapy.   At the Medical Center, the APP acts as continuity of care liaison by consulting on hospitalized patients with problematic wounds, and rounding on established Wound Center patients.  The incumbent participates in improving adult wound care nursing outcomes in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, and educates professional staff regarding wound care competence.  The APP makes recommenda¬tions to improve Wound Center clinical care, and revises department¬al policies and procedures accordingly.  This position demonstrates a high level of nursing competence in wound care treatment and supervision of the Wound Center team’s clinical performance. The Wound Center APP demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care that is appropriate to the ages of the patients served.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

The job incumbent is required to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned unit(s). 

 

This requires the incumbent to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development as well as the physical, emotional and psycho-social needs of the patient population served.

 

 

Work requires an advanced professional level of medical and nursing knowledge in order to evaluate, develop, and revise care delivery plans, conduct required research, and practice at a level normally acquired by completion of a Masters Degree in Physician Assistant Studies or Advanced Practice Nurse.

 

 

Requires current State Licensure as an APN or Physician Assistant in the state of Illinois.

 

Physician Assistant: Must have passed national certification and maintain certification

 

APN: Must have passed national certification test and maintain certification

 

 

Approximately 3 to 5 years progressively more responsible related work experience, with 1 to 2 years experience in assigned specialty area necessary to gain advanced competence in knowledge, skills, procedures, standards, practice, and research.

 

Obtain Wound Care Specialist certification within first 4 years of employment.

 

 

Advanced interpersonal skills are necessary to instruct patients and families, communicate complex theoretical and technical concepts to all levels of department personnel, and collaborate effectively with other healthcare team members.

 

 

Advanced analytical skills necessary in order to develop, recommend and improve nursing care, policies and procedures, evaluate Nursing Practice Act and Joint Commission compliance, develop educational programs, and conduct scholarly research.

 

 

Satisfactory completion of the ambulatory care new employee orientation as well as the Advanced Practice Provider competency checklist
