Description

Reporting to the Patient Care Manager and according to department standards, functions as a member of the Patient Care Team to provide appropriate basic care to the childbearing woman, (10-55 years of age).  This includes taking vital signs, assisting patients with admissions to the unit, activities of daily living, assisting the physician by preparing and scrubbing for vaginal deliveries and sterile procedures like Cesarean sections, Cervical Cerclage, D&C, hysterectomy, etc., and assisting with clean-up and preparing for next case in Labor and Delivery OR suite, blood draws, accu-checks, basic respiratory therapy, urinary catheterizations, application of fetal monitors, and observing patients for physi­cal/emotional changes.  Records pertinent information in the patient record and communicates with other patient care team members to ensure continuity of care.  Prepares for scheduled operations and arranges sterile set‑up of instrument table.  Assists surgeons by maintaining inventory and passing instruments and supplies, holding retractors and assisting surgeons' during course of surgery.  Cleans operating room and stores equipment and supplies.  Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care that is appropriate to the ages of the patients served.  The following are general characteristics of this job, although duties may vary by assigned shift.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

 

The job incumbent is required to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care to the child-bearing family.  This requires that the incumbent demonstrates knowledge of the princi­ples of growth and devel­opment as well as the physical, emotional and psycho-social needs of the pregnant woman.

 

Work requires completion of high school education, and graduate of an approved school of practical nursing, operating room technician or military training program, or a certified CNA program, and one or more years ORT/LPN*/CNA experience with successful completion of AORN Periop 101 within 2 months of hire, if not completed surgical tech certification. 

 

Must be self directed and self-motivated to adequately prepare for the birthing process, and respond to the needs of the patient in an emergency situation with minimal direction.

 

Work requires three months unit-specific orientation and on-the-job training to become familiar with work routines, physician preferences in the delivery and surgery areas, location of equipment and supplies, and develop proficiency in patient care tech duties.  Maintains proficiency in obtained skills.

 

Work requires the interpersonal skills necessary to comfort patients, family members and/or significant others;  and to communicate effectively with other patient care providers and a multi-disciplinary, skilled work group.

 

Work requires analytical ability necessary to prioritize work load and be able to perform a number of task in succession with minimal observation.  Accepts responsibility for actions and seeks out assistance to patient care team as needed.

 

Current American Heart Association HealthCare Provider BLS CPR or approved equivalent (must include infant through adult, one and two-man rescuer, use of AED, and choking with hands-on CPR skills return demonstration, and must be pre-approved by Org Dev/Human Resources) completed prior to employment.

 
 
*LPN’s hired after March 10, 2011 must obtain NRP certification within one year of hire. Once obtained, certification must be maintained every two years.
