According to established policies and procedures, demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide exercise, education, and care that is appropriate to inpatient and outpatient cardiac rehab and health fitness patients. Evaluates patient's clinical data and provides a medically prescribed exercise therapy plan to address the patient's specific needs. Participates in community education programs, as requested.
The job incumbent is required to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care appropriate to the age of the clients served. This requires that the incumbent demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development as well as the physical, emotional and psycho-social needs of the patient population.
Work requires professional knowledge of normal cardiac function, cardiac pathology, exercise physiology, exercise science, physical therapy, stages of change theory and adult learning theory at a level that generally can be acquired by completion of a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, physical education or an approach in allied health field.
Must have a working knowledge of cardiac pathology, interventions and surgery.
Work requires six to twelve months of on-the-job training in order to independently conduct exercise sessions and evaluations, develop and modify exercise prescriptions for multiple-system diseased populations, identify and respond to normal and abnormal EKG rhythms, and have a professional knowledge of multiple disease states as they relate to exercise therapy.
Work requires a high level of interpersonal skills necessary to work with patients, clients, physicians, and Medical Center personnel.
Maintains Basic Life Support certification.
Able to perform graded exercise testing as needed.
Completion of Advanced Cardiac Life Support course is required within the first 6 months of employment for Phases I & II; recommended for Phase III and Health Fitness.
