Description

The Hospice Pastoral Care is to provide spiritual and emotional support and counseling to patients/families and staff in accordance with OSF policy, mission and objectives. Pastoral Care works closely with other members of the hospice team in assisting with holistic care of patients and families. Pastoral Care responds to the patient/ family spiritual needs within the boundaries of the patient/family desires and belief system. The Pastoral Care employee has a working and dotted line reporting relationship to an OSF Healthcare System hospital Pastoral Care Chaplain in the region as designated. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care that is appropriate to the ages of the patients served. This requires that the individual demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development as well as the physical, emotional and psychosocial needs of the patient population served.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of religious philosophy and guidance counseling at a level normally acquired through completion of an accredited religious seminary or theological school.
  • Minimum of one to two years’ experience in providing pastoral care to persons within a medical setting preferred and/or one year of parish experience.
  • Clinical pastoral care education training and experience in working with life threatening illness and death is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Catholic sacramental of moral theology preferred.
  • Understanding and ability to interpret ethical and religious directives for Catholic Health Care Services.
  • Analytical skills necessary in order to assess spiritual needs and provide appropriate guidance.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients, families, other pastoral care staff, and hospice team, often in times of crisis.
  • Provides own transportation and auto insurance and abides by all laws, rules and recommendations for safe driving while on duty.  Maintains a valid driver’s license.
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently and execute own workload.
  • Must be able to use and operate office equipment.
  • Responsible for taking on-call on a rotating basis.
  • Expected to take night and weekend calls, and make home visits to patients during the evening, night, weekend and/or holiday hours as required.
