Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, supports, teaches and assesses breastfeeding in the clinical setting. Answers parents questions and counsels parents via the telephone. Provides continuing education to staff and functions as a resource person to professional and lay groups. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care that is appropriate to the ages of the patients served (child-bearing, 10-55 years of age/newborns). Assessment, planning, interaction, documentation and evaluation of care in a variety of situations.
The job incumbent is required to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit(s). This requires that the incumbent demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development as well as the physical, emotional and psycho-social needs of the patient population served.
Work requires current state license as a Registered Professional Nurse.
Work requires 2-5 years of progressively more responsible experience on a nursing care unit with successful completion of course for lactation educator or certified lactation counselor to develop an understanding of the concerns, questions, and problems of breasting feeding parents and develop counseling expertise.
Work requires the interpersonal skills necessary to comfort, support and counsel patients and to instruct patients in proper breastfeeding techniques.
Work requires analytical ability necessary to assess patients' needs, identify problems, and develop solutions.
Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
Work requires job incumbent to obtain IBCLC board certification within 1-2 years of initially accepting the position.
Computer skills to operate software program for billing/tracking.
Knowledge of retail operations with a business background.
