Job Description

Description

Reporting to the Supervisor, Maternal-Fetal Diagnostic Center and according to department policies and physician orders, performs diagnostic fetal ultrasounds on high risk obstetric patients in both local offices and regional perinatal clinics. In doing so, obtains information about normal and abnormal anatomy used to diagnose fetal abnormalities.  Assists with diagnostic procedures that utilize ultrasound.  Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care that is appropriate to the ages of the patients served (Childbearing).

 

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The job incumbent is required to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit(s).  


This requires that the incumbent demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development as well as the physical, emotional and psycho-social needs of the patient population served.

 

Work requires a professional level of knowledge of ultrasound techniques and procedures at a level that generally can be acquired by completion of two years training in Radiology Technolo­gy plus an additional 18 months training in Ultrasonography.

 

Current registration as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer and in the OB/GYN modality required


Acquires and maintains certification in nuchal translucency measurement and nasal bone.

Work requires up to twelve months of prior related work experience to be able to independently perform noninvasive diagnostic ultrasound procedures on high risk pregnancy patients and assist in invasive procedures.

 

Work requires the interpersonal skills to allay apprehensions of pregnant patients who may be concerned about potential life-threatening condition of the fetus, discuss preliminary findings with physicians, and deal effectively with various other medical center departments regarding scheduling demands and conflicts.

 

Work requires analytical ability to recognize anatomic abnormalities in fetus(es), adjust equipment settings to appropriately target the ultrasound, and identify subtle changes in fetal condition during course of ultrasound
