Description

Under the supervision of the Laboratory Director or Supervisor and according to established policies and procedures, prepares specimens by freezing and cutting tissue samples, processing non gynecological material, mounting specimens on slides and staining or treating with chemicals so as to reveal specific structural details under microscopic analysis. Assists the anatomic pathologist in the performance of gross description, dissection of tissue specimens removed during surgery and fine needle aspirations  Assess patient charges for services performed.   

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


High school or equivalent education and knowledge of anatomy, basic mathematics, fixation and tissue processing techniques and medical terminology as normally acquired through completion of one year experience as a laboratory assistant.


Approximately 1 to 3 months on the job experience is necessary in order to gain knowledge of frozen section techniques, reagents, solutions and equipment maintenance, and ability to perform a wide variety of histology procedures.


Interpersonal skills necessary in order to interact effectively with physicians, nursing staff, technologists and other personnel when gathering and exchanging specimen related information, handling inquiries, solving specimen/requisition deficiencies, surgery scheduling changes.
