Description

Medical Records Coder assigns accurate ICD CM/PCS & CPT/HCPCS codes to all pertinent diagnoses and procedures on inpatient and outpatient encounters; to comply with coding guidelines, abstracts all required information for statistical and reimbursement purposes. This position works closely with revenue cycle mission partners to ensure appropriate billing and reimbursement.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

High school diploma or GED

 

1 year of coding experience in an acute care hospital setting or physician’s office coding or successful completion of the coding curriculum in an approved AAPC/AHIMA program.

 

RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CCA or CPC.

 

Basic knowledge of ICD CM/PCS and CPT/HCPCS coding guidelines. 

 

Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, disease processes, medical records and hospital procedures.

 

Ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted.

 

Basic keyboard and software application skills. 

 

Able to provide information to supervisors, co-workers and physicians by telephone, written, e-mail or in person.

 

Knowledge of the principles and processes for providing excellent customer service and personal service. 

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Bachelors or associate degree

 

2 or more years of recent coding experience in an acute care hospital.

 

Extensive knowledge of ICD CM/PCS and CPT/HCPCS coding guidelines. 

 

Proficient in the use of personal computers, Microsoft applications, and working knowledge of hospital and department computer systems, including the EMR.
