Under the supervision of the Laboratory Director or Supervisor and according to established policies and procedures, may perform phlebotomy duties as described in the phlebotomy job description, prepares, logs and labels specimens. Determines quality of specimen submitted including proper collections and labeling. If required by department protocol: centrifuges, aliquots, and delivers specimens to laboratory sections; prepares specimens for automated analysis; performs automated analysis and other limited testing. Maintains professional relationship with patients, staff, and physicians. The following are general characteristics of this job, although duties may vary by assigned area and/or shift.
High School diploma or equivalent.
Approximately three to six months on the job experience is necessary in order to learn facility layout, proper procedures, documentation and record keeping requirements, and use of LIS
Ability to read and follow policies and procedures written in English. Ability to understand written and spoken English.
Ability to understand to remember and to understand the written and spoken word. Ability to read and follow policies and procedures written in English.
Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, nursing and various laboratory personnel when gathering and exchanging patient related information, handling inquiries, solving specimen quality issues, providing test results over the telephone.
Analytical skills necessary for any phlebotomy requirements, specimen preparation, and testing.
Ability to travel to patient care areas (may include nursing homes, physician offices, clinics, patient’s homes, or other off-site locations). Must possess valid driver’s license if laboratory protocol requires travel to off-site locations.
