Job Description


Reports to the Respiratory Therapy Department Manager. Works in accordance with evidenced based policies and procedures of the Medical Center. Administers medical gases, medications, airway clearance, and other respiratory modalities for patients experiencing breathing problems under the direction of a physician. Applies theoretical knowledge to the care of adolescent and adult patients and other members of the healthcare team by demonstrating competence in respiratory skills, problem solving and critical thinking that is appropriate to the ages of the patients served.




The job incumbent is required to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served according to all units.


This requires that the incumbent demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development as well as the physical, emotional and psycho-social needs of the patient population served.


Knowledge of medical terminology, respiratory therapy procedures, supplies, equipment, and administration of therapeutic medical gases and medications.



Successful completion of licensed practical nursing program or respiratory therapist program from an accredited school.



Knowledge of patient care methods, treatment, pharmacology, and observation skills at a level normally acquired through an accredited School of Practical Nursing or an accredited School of Respiratory Care.



Must have a current Licensed Practical Nursing license in the State of Illinois or Respiratory Care Practitioner license in the State of Illinois.



Successful completion of orientation for general floor therapy.



Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients when explaining treatment procedures and with physicians, RNs and other healthcare personnel.



Analytical skills necessary in order to observe and evaluate patients during treatments, troubleshoot equipment, and react appropriately in emergency situations.



Meets education and in-service requirements according to department specific policy.



Must have a current BLS card.



Must have basic computer skills and complete training for the electronic medical record.
