Description

The Referral Specialist within the OSF Access Center Referral Services Department is responsible for the timely and efficient processing of referral orders .  Demonstrates an understanding of the importance of a daily focus on quality in the performance of job functions.  Must be able to articulate information in a clear and knowledgeable manner to patients, family members, providers, office staff and insurance company representatives.

The Referral Specialist is responsible for:

- Verifying in-network/out-of-network insurance benefits and obtaining authorizations for referrals and testing
- Providing excellent customer service to all customers - patients and their family members, providers, office staff, internal departments, and insurance company employees
- Obtaining appointments with Non-OSF specialty providers or facilities
- Determining the pertinent clinical information in the patient's EMR to send to the Non-OSF specialist
- Researching specialists and facilities In Network with various insurance payors and plans
- Organizing and updating provider and facility demographics and referral requirements, insurance payor and plan specifications, Referral Center processes and policies as well as information pertaining to assigned workqueues
This position impacts the clinical and financial risk to the organization when scheduling appointments with specialists or facilities and obtaining insurance percertification or authorization.
 

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

MOA or CMA required or equivalent clinical medical experience in a medical practice office. 

 

Medical terminology, coding, and experience with referral coordination and health insurance payors is preferred. 

 

Requires strong attention to detail and ability to obtain and record information accurately. 

 

Requires excellent and effective verbal and written communication skills. 

 

Requires computer skills, an understanding of electronic medical records, an understanding of website navigation and a willingness to learn new technology. 

 

Critical thinking skills are required as well as basic problem solving skills, time management skills and the ability to prioritize the daily work.
