Job Description

Description

Reporting to the Department Manager, Supervisor, Lead, or Charge laboratory personnel, and according to established policies and procedures, obtains blood and other specimens from inpatients, outpatients, ED patients, extended care facility patients, physician office patients, clinic patients, home care patients, and any other offsite location patients for laboratory testing according to licensed physician’s or provider’s orders. In doing so, obtains needed supplies, verifies patient identification, prepares skin sites, and performs venipuncture, arterial puncture (per department protocol) and skin punctures according to established aseptic techniques. Labels specimens and transports same to laboratory for analysis. Performs clerical and/or computer duties associated with the laboratory. Functions as Charge Phlebotomist when designated. Provides phlebotomy teaching and training to staff and/or students when designated. May perform preceptor duties. Performs legal blood alcohol specimen collection as required. Performs point of care laboratory testing per Federal CLIA regulation when applicable. Maintains professional relationship with patients, staff, and physicians. Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

High school diploma or equivalent.

 

Completion of formal structured phlebotomy program OR 3 months’ full-time phlebotomy experience or equivalent.

 

 

Satisfactory completion of one of the following certifying examinations: PBT (ASCP), MLT(ASCP), MT(ASCP), CLS(NCA), MLS(ASCP) or categorical/specialty (ASCP).

 

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Associate or baccalaureate degree in science related area.

 

1 or more years’ full-time experience (or equivalent) performing phlebotomy in hospital or large clinic.
