Description

The OB Technician performs any combination of the following duties in the care of patients in the hospital, under direction of a Registered Nurse.  The role uses cognitive, effective and psychomotor behaviors congruent with the status of an OB Technician.  Provides care for patients and family/significant others across the life span based on physical, psycho-social, educational, safety and related criteria appropriate to the age of patients served in the patient care unit.  The employee’s knowledge and practice of patient safety principles will be evaluated annually.  Responsibility will include direct patient/family contact, departmental duties, material management, communication and departmental housekeeping.  Follows and understands the standards and recommended practices according to department standards such as AORN, AWHONN.  The OB Technician is responsible for scrub duties assigned for cesarean section deliveries as well as occasional vaginal deliveries.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

High School graduate or equivalent. 

 

Certified as a nursing assistant. 

 

Prior experience within the hospital environment is preferred, but not mandatory. 

 

Must possess current cognitive knowledge in medical terminology and abbreviation. 

 

Experience with aseptic technique required and experience as a Scrub Tech preferred.

 

Knowledge of the duties and responsibilities as described in the general summary. 

 

The individual has an understanding of and practices patient confidentiality; displays problem identification and conflict resolution skills.

 

Skills and Abilities: 

     • Must be punctual, dependable and conscientious individual.

     • American Heart Association Health Care Provider BLS, CPR skills validation.

     • Good communication, organization and interpersonal skills.

     • Ability to scrub and maintain aseptic technique.

     • Understands and demonstrates aseptic technique and principles, universal precautions and isolation procedures.

     • Collect accurate patient data and complete documentation.

     • Able to operate selected hospital equipment.

     • Successful completion of The American Heart Association’s Neonatal Resuscitation Course biannually.
