DescriptionReporting to the Laboratory Supervisor of Pathology assists in overseeing and directing work of lower-classified personnel engaged in preparing tissues for microscopic examination by freezing and cutting tissue samples, mounting specimens on slides and staining tissues. Performs more complex and/or nonroutine histology procedures, and regularly reviews work performed in area to ensure work is carried out in accordance with established policies and procedures.
A bachelor’s degree in a science discipline is required with successful completion of a NAACLS accredited histotechnology program. ASCP HT/HTL certification is also required. Alternative bachelor’s degrees are acceptable with successful completion of ASCP HT/HTL exam prior to employment.
Three to five years on the job experience necessary in order to develop proficiency in histology techniques and become familiar with work flow and work load requirements.
Certification by Board of Registry of American Society of Clinical Pathologists is required.
Maintains current certification according to guidelines established by appropriate certifying agency
Interpersonal skills necessary in order to lead and direct other employees in the histology laboratory.
Analytical skills necessary to ascertain physician needs and determine appropriate specimen preparation method, to determine suitability of stains on specimens and the like.
